BGAS-CSWIP Examinations

TWI runs the British Gas Approval Scheme (BGAS) - formerly referred to as ERS - on behalf of Transco.

Although it is recommended that candidates receive training, there are no specific training and experience requirements any of the BGAS qualifications.

The system is primarily designed for inspectors involved in one or more of a number of activities related to pipelines and the oil and gas industries. BGAS-CSWIP qualifications are highly regarded qualifications, which complement the well-known CSWIP inspection qualifications, both are internationally recognised.

The following categories of certification are available from TWI SEA

  • Painting Inspector Grade 1
  • Painting Inspector Grade 2
  • Painting Inspector Grade 3
  • Site Coatings Inspector

Other qualifications are available in the BGAS-CSWIP scheme upon request.

Personnel Certification in Non-Destructive Testing (PCN)

The PCN scheme, an internationally recognised scheme for the certification competence of NDT personnel, is accredited as meeting the requirements of European Standards EN 45013 and EN 473, and international standard ISO 9712.

Certificates of competence are valid for five years from issue, following a demonstration of qualification which includes specific periods of training and experience, and a thoroughly searching independent examination.

The scheme offers three levels of certification specific to industry sectors and NDT methods are defined as follows.

TWI SEA offers the following PCN examinations at permanent locations in the UK and overseas, and periodically at additional locations according to demand.

  • Ultrasonic testing of aerospace materials, components and structures, welds and wrought products

  • Interpretation of radiographs of welds

  • Eddy current testing of aerospace materials, components and structures, castings, welds and wrought products

  • Magnetic particle testing of aerospace materials, castings, welds and wrought products

  • Liquid penetrant testing of aerospace materials, castings, welds and wrought products

Information on the above examinations can be obtained from TWI SEA

Employer-specific certification to SNT-TC-A1

TWI SEA provides employer-specific certification in accordance with SNT-TC-A1. The scheme involves a written practice for education, training, experience and examination requirements to be specified by the employer. TWI's ASNT Level 3 staff are available to assist employers and to administer examinations in all levels I, II, III (TWI SEA are the only approved level III test centre in the South East Asia region.

IIW and EWF Qualifications

These two qualification schemes have merged into one and the operation of the single scheme is now under the authority of the International Authorisation Board (IAB).

In the medium term, both EWF and IIW diplomas will be issued but these stem from a common teaching curriculum and examination system.

A number of qualifications are available:

  • European Welding Engineer/International Welding Engineer

  • European Welding Technologist/International Welding Technologist

  • European Welding Specialist/International Welding Specialist

  • European Welding Practitioner/International Welding Practitioner

  • International Welding Inspection Personnel (4 levels)

  • International Welder

Training and examinations conducted by TWI meet the requirements laid down by the IAB. Some of the qualifications are referred to in European standards, particularly EN719 dealing with co-ordination of welding tasks and responsibilities and are therefore expected to play a key role in assessment of competence of welding personnel at all levels.

An 'Alternative Route' to the qualifications is now available to individuals who can demonstrate extensive prior learning and relevant experience.

EWF continues to operate a number of its own qualification schemes but it is expected that these will eventually become part of the IAB portfolio. These include:

European Thermal Spraying Personnel
European Adhesive Bonding Personnel

The International Welding Inspection qualifications are available from TWI through a bridging arrangement with the CSWIP welding inspection qualifications.
